Inverter vs Non-Inverter AC in Pakistan 2026: Real Monthly Bill Compared

2 min read

Updated October 2026. With electricity at up to Rs 47 a unit before taxes, the AC is now the biggest decision in a Pakistani household budget. We compared inverter and non-inverter ACs using NEPRA’s 2026 slab rates, so you can see the real effect on your bill, not just the units.

AC cost calculator → Enter your AC size, hours and other units to see your exact bill.

How many units does an AC use?

ACAverage power in summerUnits at 8 hours/day (30 days)
1 ton inverterabout 0.75 kWabout 180
1 ton non-inverterabout 1.25 kWabout 300
1.5 ton inverterabout 1.1 kWabout 264
1.5 ton non-inverterabout 1.8 kWabout 432

These are averages over a cooling cycle at 26°C in 35–45°C weather. A small, shaded, well-sealed room uses less; a top-floor room facing west uses more.

The real cost: your whole bill changes slab

Take a home that uses 150 units a month without AC and is a protected consumer. Its energy charges are about Rs 2,208 (with FCA and 18% GST). Now add a 1.5-ton AC for 8 hours a day:

DC inverterNon-inverter
Total units414582
Slab rateRs 38.95Rs 40.22
Monthly bill (energy, FCA, GST)Rs 19,570Rs 28,384
Extra cost of the ACRs 17,362Rs 26,176

The AC itself uses 264 or 432 units, but the bill rises 9 to 13 times because the home loses its protected rate and every unit moves to a higher slab. The inverter saves about Rs 8,800 a month, or about Rs 44,000 over a five-month summer, which covers most of its higher purchase price in one season.

Running hours compared (1.5 ton, home using 150 other units)

Hours per dayInverter billNon-inverter bill
6 hoursRs 15,428Rs 22,406
8 hoursRs 19,570Rs 28,384
12 hoursRs 26,628Rs 45,491

When a non-inverter still makes sense

  • You run the AC for only a few hours on the hottest days.
  • It runs on solar during the day.
  • Voltage in your area is very unstable and you can’t use a stabiliser (inverter boards are more sensitive).

7 ways to cut AC cost

  1. Set 26°C and use a ceiling fan alongside.
  2. Clean filters every two weeks in summer.
  3. Shade the outdoor unit and keep it clear.
  4. Close curtains on sunny windows; seal gaps under doors.
  5. Use the timer or sleep mode at night.
  6. Keep an eye on the 200-unit line with our protected status tracker.
  7. Consider solar for daytime cooling: see net metering vs hybrid.
