Tax: under Section 154A of the Income Tax Ordinance, banks deduct tax on IT and IT-enabled export proceeds when they are realised in Pakistan: 0.25% for PSEB-registered exporters and 1% otherwise. It is generally a final tax if you file your return by the due date. Transfer costs vary by account and change often; the defaults are typical figures, so check your own provider’s fee page. How to keep more of your earnings

  • Register with PSEB as an individual freelancer: your tax drops from 1% to 0.25%. Renew the certificate every year.
  • File your return by 30 September to stay on the Active Taxpayer List and keep the deduction as final tax.
  • Bring money through banking channels only. Earnings left abroad or received through hawala don’t get the 154A treatment.
  • Keep part in a foreign-currency account if your bank allows retention, and convert when the rate is better.
  • Compare FX margins: a 1.5% difference on $1,000 is about Rs 4,200 every month.
How much tax do freelancers pay in Pakistan?

Banks deduct 0.25% of the PKR amount if you are PSEB-registered and 1% if you are not, under Section 154A. If you file your return on time this is usually your final tax on that income.

Payoneer or Wise: which gives more PKR?

It depends on your fees. With typical figures, Wise’s lower margin usually leaves more in hand than Payoneer’s withdrawal FX margin. Edit the costs above to compare with your own account.
