How to choose the right National Savings scheme

  • 60+, widow or disabled: Behbood Savings Certificates usually win: highest rate, monthly profit, and no withholding tax or zakat.
  • Retired pensioner: the Pensioners’ Benefit Account pays the same tax-free monthly rate.
  • Need monthly income: Regular Income Certificates or Sarwa Islamic Term Account (5 years).
  • Parking money short term: Short Term Savings Certificates (3, 6 or 12 months) avoid zakat.
  • Become a filer: non-filers lose 30% of profit to tax instead of 15%.
Is National Savings profit taxable?

Yes, on most schemes. CDNS deducts 15% withholding tax for filers and 30% for non-filers. Behbood, Pensioners’ Benefit and Shuhada Family Welfare accounts are exempt.

How much does Rs 10 lakh earn in Behbood per month?

At 12.96% a year, Rs 10 lakh earns Rs 10,800 a month with no tax or zakat deducted.

When is zakat deducted from National Savings?

On 1st Ramadan, at 2.5%, on Special Savings Certificates, Defence Savings Certificates and the Savings Account, unless you have submitted a zakat exemption declaration (CZ-50).
