How PTA mobile tax is calculated in 2026-27
The tax depends on the phone’s value in US dollars. Each value slab has:
- Regulatory duty: a fixed amount for the slab.
- Sales tax: 18% of the phone’s value, or 25% for phones above $500.
- Mobile handset levy: a fixed amount for the slab.
- Income tax (section 148): a fixed amount, charged only when you register on a CNIC.
That last item is why passport registration usually costs less.
Where each phone’s value comes from
PTA tax depends on the value customs assigns to your model, not the price you paid. We use FBR’s own customs values:
- Apple iPhones (iPhone 6S to iPhone 16 series): FBR Valuation Ruling No. 1999/2025 (23 April 2025), with a separate value for each storage size.
- All other brands: FBR Valuation Ruling No. 1834/2023 (6 December 2023), which lists more than 1,100 models. Its note says phones brought in by passengers are assessed on these values too.
- Newer models not yet in any ruling (iPhone 17 series, Galaxy S24/S25, Z Fold/Flip 6 and 7, Google Pixel, OnePlus 11 to 13) are marked estimate and use the global launch price. Customs often assesses a lower value, so your real tax may be less.
If your model or variant isn’t listed, type its value in US$ yourself. For the final figure for your IMEI, check dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
What changed in Budget 2026-27

- Sales tax is unchanged: 18%, or 25% for phones above $500.

Frequently asked questions
How is PTA tax on mobile phones calculated in 2026-27?
The tax is worked out on the phone's value in US dollars. Each value slab has a fixed regulatory duty and a fixed mobile handset levy, plus sales tax as a percentage of the phone's value (18%, or 25% for phones above $500). Phones registered on a CNIC also pay a fixed income tax under section 148.
Which is cheaper, Passport or CNIC registration?
Passport registration is cheaper because it does not include the section 148 income tax. It is meant for people who bring a phone from abroad and register it soon after arriving (usually within 60 days) on their passport or NICOP. Everyone else registers on CNIC.
Which phone value does PTA use?
Customs uses its own valuation for each model, not the price on your receipt. The calculator uses an approximate launch price for popular models, and you can type any value. For the exact figure for your handset, enter its IMEI on the PTA DIRBS portal.
How do I pay the PTA tax?
Open dirbs.pta.gov.pk, choose to pay the duty on your device, enter the IMEI and your Passport or CNIC details, and generate a PSID. Pay it through any bank app, ATM or branch. The phone is usually unblocked within a day after payment.
Is the dollar rate fixed?
No. The amount in rupees changes with the exchange rate on the day you pay. You can change the dollar rate in the calculator to see the effect.
